Gastric Bypass
Gastric bypass
surgery is for patients who are morbidly obese. It is a surgical procedure
in which a small area of the stomach is sectioned off, so that the stomach
has much less room for food. The idea is that this allows the patient to eat
a smaller amount of food before feeling satisfied. This does not address any
issues of emotional or compulsive eating, so the patient could likely still
feel compelled to eat more food.
This surgery should only be used as a last resort, by
those who have serious health risks caused by being obese and are not able
to lose weight through diet and exercise.
Lap Band
The Lap Band is
a commercial surgical procedure that mimics the effects of a gastric bypass
without cutting or stapling the stomach. Instead, a band is placed around
the stomach to create the smaller stomach portion.
In Los Angeles there are actually billboards
advertizing this.
Liposuction
Liposuction has been around a long time and nowadays it almost seems
outdated. Liposuction is a surgical procedure that sucks fat out of a
person's body. A small tube, attached to a suction device, is inserted into
the fat through a small incision in the skin. The surgeon then moves the
tube back and forth, sucking the fat out of the area. This can be done on
almost any part of the body.
Surgeons claim that the most common risk is the risk
of too-high expectations on the patient's part. Actual risks include
scarring, adverse reactions to anesthesia or other drugs, nerve injury, and
much more.
