Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified
An Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified is generally
an eating disorder that is similar to one of the main diagnosable disorders,
but not all of the criteria are present. For example, a person might have
all of the signs of Anorexia but not be technically underweight. This person
would be participating in all of the same harmful behaviors. Or, a person
may experience episodes of binging and purging, but may not do so frequently
enough to warrant a diagnosis of bulimia nervosa.
Something Fishy has a great explanation of
Eating Disorder Not
Otherwise Specified and I encourage you to read through their write-up.
It is important that people become more familiar with this type of eating
disorder because someone who is suffering may not feel that they are worthy
of help if they don't fit all of the standard criteria for an eating
disorder. Medical Definition
- The Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified
category include disorders that do not meet the criteria for a specific
eating disorder. Each one of the following disorders is an example:
- For females, all of the criteria for anorexia are
met except that the individual has regular periods.
- All of the criteria for anorexia nervosa are met
except that, despite substantial weight loss, the individual's current
weight is in the normal range.
- All of the criteria for bulimia are met except that
binge and purging episodes occur at a frequency of less than twice a week
or for a duration of less than 3 months.
- The regular use of inappropriate compensatory
behavior by an individual of normal body weight after eating small amounts
of food (eg; self-induced vomiting after the consumption of two cookies).
- Repeatedly chewing and spitting out, but not
swallowing, large amounts of food.
